Thief River Falls City Administrator Rod Otterness will retire Jan. 29. The Thief River Falls City Council accepted Otterness’ retirement at its meeting Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Otterness said he loves working for the city and cried when he submitted his resignation letter to Mayor Brian Holmer.

Holmer noted that the Administrative Services Committee will consider the hiring process for a new city administrator at its meeting Tuesday, Nov. 13.

The council hired Otterness in March 2016. Prior to being employed with the city of Thief River Falls, Otterness was the city manager of Union Gap, Wash., for three years. In the past, he also served as the city administrator of International Falls and as an attorney, including serving as a city attorney.
