{mosimage}\"\" Thief River Falls – Jacob “Jake” Barnick, 90, died at his home residence in Thief River Falls, with his wife and family present on Aug. 24, 2006, on his 58th wedding anniversary.
  Mass of Christian burial was held on Tuesday, August 29, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls,  with Father Tim McGee presiding. Military honors were provided by the American Legion Ecklund-Holmstrom Post 117 and V.F.W. Post 2793 of Thief River Falls. Interment will be held at Spring Park Cemetery, Sandstone.
 Jake was born on July 19, 1916 near Sandstone, to William and Elise (Splinter) Barnick. As a young man he was a noted auctioneer and a World War II army veteran. After his military service, he married Anne C. Muehlbauer of Sandstone on August 28, 1948.  He owned and operated several furniture stores in eastern Minnesota, before moving to Thief River Falls.  In 1956 Jake built Barnick’s Highway Furniture Mart and remained in business until 1976.  He was instrumental in developing the shopping center area now occupied by Wal-Mart, and was a member of the Eagles, American Legion, VFW, Elks and Chamber of Commerce.
  Jake is survived by his wife, Anne; three daughters, Joan Baker of Thief River Falls, Susan (Joseph) Mesch of Sierra Vista, Ariz., and Jackie of San Francisco, Calif.; three sons, Jim of San Diego, Calif., Mark and Robert of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren; two great-grandsons; and one brother, Mike of Duluth.
  Jake was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, William and Barney.
