Penny was born on April 24, 1928 in Thief River Falls, to Thora and John Nelson and graduated from Lincoln High School in the class of 1946.
In 1948, Penny married Trygve Johnson from Fertile. They had their first home in St. Paul and later raised their family in Rochester. Penny was actively involved in the Rochester community, including the Girls Scouts, Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, and was past president of the Rochester YWCA. The couple retired to Tucson, Ariz., in 1988.
Throughout her remarkable life, Penny became a talented seamstress, creating stunning quilts, comforters and wall hangings. She also enjoyed swimming, yoga and birding. Penny loved life, conversation and all the wonderful people she met along the way.
In her heart, Penny never left the Thief River Falls community. She returned for family gatherings and many class reunions. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Millard, Truman and Herold Nelson. Penny is survived by her husband, her children Linda Slagter and Steve Johnson, three grandsons, four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
