The Pennington County Board approved about $180,000 in expenses related to the Highway Department at its meeting Tuesday, July 12.

County Board approved paying $138,200 to Schenkey Inc. to crush gravel near Trail. County Engineer Mike Flaagan said the gravel will be used in the eastern one-third of the county. He believed he had budgeted $140,000 for gravel crushing.

Commissioners approved a quote for the installation of culverts under driveways and field crossings along Pennington County State Aid Highway 7. Dyrdahl Construction had the low quote of $39,033.84 to install the culverts in anticipation of a 2024 reconstruction project.
Other quotes came from Jeff Olson Construction, $48,214; R.J. Zavoral & Sons, $75,664; and (Steve) Olson Construction, $77,864.

County Board accepted a quote from Asbestos Control & Consulting Team to abate asbestos on the lower level of the Government Center (former courthouse). ACCT provided a quote of $20,500. American Rescue Plan funding will cover the cost.

New flooring will be installed on the east side of the lower level. Later, commissioners expect to approve a quote for similar work on the third floor, where the Human Services Department will soon move.

As part of separate motions, commissioners approved severing its relationship with Summit Food Service Management and seeking a request for proposals. Summit provides food services for the Pennington County Jail. With its motion, County Board approved providing a 90-day notice to Summit.

Sheriff Ray Kuznia said there have been quality issues that haven’t been remedied.

The next County Board meeting is scheduled Tuesday, July 26 at 5 p.m. at the Justice Center.
