Funeral services were held on Monday, June 30, at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden, with Rev. Nancy Hanson officiating. Honorary casket bearers included all of Hanna’s grandchildren. Casket bearers included Marvin, Dale, Gerald, Richard, Dennis and Kenneth Hjelle. Interment was held at Spruce Valley Cemetery, Middle River.
Hanna Marie Nelson was born on November 24, 1913 to Gunner and Emma (Brekkestrand) Nelson in Marsh Grove Township, Marshall County. She was baptized at Bethania and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden. She attended country school in Marsh Grove Township. She worked outside of the house for a few years.
Hanna was united in marriage to Morris Nathaniel Moen on March 30, 1935 in Newfolden. They made their home in New Maine Township. Hanna raised nine children. She did a lot of baking for area restaurants in her years. She and Morris owned and operated the Nu Moon Café in Newfolden for four years. She moved into Newfolden in 1987. Hanna moved to the Thief River Care Center in 2007.
Hanna enjoyed baking and cooking. She did some fancy work and made quilts. She didn’t like watching TV. She enjoyed flower gardening. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She always made sure there was something to eat for everyone.
Hanna is survived by five sons, Marvin (Betty) Moen, Thief River Falls, Dale (Linda) Moen, Orlando, Fla., Gerald (Elona) Moen, Newfolden, Richard (Pat) Moen, Newfolden, Dennis (Beverly) Moen, Oklee; four daughters, Gwendolyn (Kenneth) Hjelle, Newfolden, Kathryn (Kameron) Harstad, East Grand Forks, Sharon (Ken) Braaten, Bagley, Diane (Gerald) Nelson, Newfolden; 25 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Cora Rantanen, Thief River Falls; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Hanna was preceded in death by her husband in 1987; her parents; eight brothers; two sisters; and two great-grandchildren.
