    Roseau – August “Ardell”  Markstrom, 86, died Saturday, July 12, 2008 at Oakland Park Communities in Thief River Falls with his loving wife of 63 years and family by his side.
  Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 15 at Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau.  
    Ardell was born to Herman and Amelia Markstrom on September 27, 1921 in Roseau. On February 3, 1945, he married Lois Odegaard at the Moe Lutheran Church in Roseau.
    Ardell and Lois have three children – Sally (Wendell) Grand of Thief River Falls, Michael (Mary) Markstrom of Sioux Falls, SD and Roger (Debbie) Markstrom of Virginia; five grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
    Ardell and Lois were members of the Moe Lutheran Church where Ardell served as treasurer of the parsonage board, member of the Men’s Club and a youth advisor for many years. He was also active in the community, volunteering at Pioneer Farm and the Four Seasons Senior Citizen Center.
    Ardell worked for Farmers Union in Roseau for many years. Following his retirement, Ardell and Lois owned a small business, delivering propane tanks to the residents of Roseau County. Ardell loved his work and especially enjoyed visiting and having coffee with many of his propane customers.
    Ardell was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. He was very active in the lives of his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He loved spending time with each of them and attending all of their activities.
    Ardell enjoyed the outdoors and hunting with his bow and arrow. He was a life-long farmer and gardener, and he shared his love and knowledge with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
    Ardell is survived by his wife, Lois; his children and their families; sisters, Hulda Oltman and Blanche Trangsrud; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Odegaard and Sharon Fugleberg; and several nieces and nephews.
    He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Art, Ed, Melvin, Milford and Carl; and sisters Amanda, Myrtle, Mildred and Ruby.
