Katie Melgaard, a dedicated science teacher at Marshall County Central High School in Newfolden, has been named a 2024 MREA Educator of Excellence in the North Zone. Melgaard was honored at the Minnesota Rural Education Association Greater Education Summit, where her passion for teaching, commitment to student success, and exceptional leadership in the school community were celebrated.
Known for making science come alive, Melgaard’s teaching goes beyond textbooks and lectures. She sparks curiosity and excitement in her students, creating a classroom environment where learning is engaging, accessible, and enjoyable. “I love helping students realize how complicated the world is and how we try to figure it out,” said Melgaard, who embodies the enthusiasm that resonates with students and colleagues alike.
Principal Brian Longerbone described Mrs. Melgaard as someone “born to do this,” praising her ability to not only share her deep knowledge but to do so with infectious energy that inspires student confidence and participation. Her students appreciate her approach, with one remarking, “She’s always making sure that everybody has a good time and everybody’s doing their best.”
Beyond the classroom, Melgaard’s impact is felt in various school programs. She leads a River Watch team, guiding students in monitoring the health of a local river, and co-teaches the school’s robotics and drone teams, which have flourished under her leadership. Longerbone noted that they even had to create a trophy case for the impressive accomplishments of these teams.
Melgaard’s commitment extends beyond academics. Known for her “soccer mom” spirit, she supports her students during competitions and helps wherever needed, including driving the bus when necessary. “She does a little bit of everything for us,” said Longerbone, underscoring Melgaard’s versatility and unwavering dedication.
Melgaard’s recognition as an MREA Educator of Excellence highlights the countless hours and heart she invests in her students and school. Her approach to teaching is a testament to the profound impact that passionate, compassionate educators have on their communities.
