The Franklin Middle School Orchestras and Lincoln High School Orchestra will present their annual winter concert Monday, March 2 at 7 p.m. in the LHS Auditorium, under the direction of Derek Druse. The cost is $5 a person with Pre-K getting free admission. All proceeds benefit the orchestra program in Thief River Falls.
The FMS Sixth Grade Orchestra will be opening with songs from their book, Finale From First Symphony by Johannes Brahms, and Liza Jane, an American folk song done in bluegrass style. Gaelic Castle features the orchestra switching melodies and articulation every eight measures. They will finish with High Flying, an energetic moving song by Tyler S. Grant.
The FMS Seventh and Eighth Grade Orchestra will start by performing Brandenburg Concerto #5, an arrangement of the famous concerto by Johann Sebastian Bach. They will also perform a medley of Irish fiddle tunes in The Legend of Duffy’s Cut, in tribute to Irish railroad workers that may have been killed by anti-Irish vigilantes in the 1800s. They will finish with the theme song of the superhero of the orchestra, The Adventures of Stringman.
The LHS Orchestra will open their portion of the program with Concerto Grosso Op. 6, No. 5 in D, written for two solo violins with orchestra by George F. Handel. They will also play the second movement of Gustav Mahler’s First Symphony.
