Arlyne Gladys Uglem was born on December 2, 1918 in Riener Township, rural Goodridge, to Oleander and Marie (Homme) Uglem. She was baptized and confirmed in Rosendahl Lutheran Church, rural Goodridge. Arlyne attended school at Lundwood Country School and graduated from Goodridge High School in 1937.
In 1942 Arlyne was united in marriage to Alvin Hyland in Omaha, NE while he was in the Army. The couple was stationed in Yuma, AZ, where they also welcomed their first son, Alan. While Alvin was stationed overseas, Arlyne and son moved home to the Goodridge area to be near family. Following his discharge, Alvin returned home and together they owned and operated the Erie Store along with Carly and Gertie Elg. They started farming the Hyland farm at which time Arlette, Audrey, Aldon, and Arden were born. After Alvin’s death, she remained on the farm until 1985.
While on the farm, Arlyne worked at Northwestern Hosptial in Thief River Falls in the dietary department. Other places of employment included Ben Franklin, Land O’Lakes, Arctic Cat, and the Health Food Store. Arlyne opened a craft store in Goodridge at the Senior Center which she ran until moving to Thief River Falls. Arlyne worked at the Heritage Center in Thief River Falls where she met Dayton Silk.
On January 4, 1997, Arlyne married Dayton at Ekelund Lutheran Church, rural Goodridge, MN and the couple made their home in Thief River Falls.
In 2002 Arlyne was recipient of Pennington County’s Senior Volunteer of the year award. She was actively involved in Ekelund Church Ladies Aid, holding many offices, and teaching Sunday School.
Arlyne had a love for sewing. She made baby quilts for many Ekelund babies. More than likely if you were affiliated with Ekelund you wrapped your baby in a quilt lovingly made by Arlyne or her sister, Ruby. She also made many layettes for Lutheran World Relief.
Her other interests included dancing, card playing, traveling, and visiting with relatives and friends.
