Tough schedule a real challenge

It’s done by design, but Thief River Falls’ penchant for putting together a demanding regular season boys high school hockey schedule can be tough on the won-loss record.
The Prowlers started the year 4-0, but are now 4-3. The setbacks have come at the hands of Breck School, ranked No. 2 in the Class A state polls; Bemidji, No. 10 in Class AA; and Hermantown, No. 1 in Class A.
Saturday afternoon’s 4-1 loss to the Hawks was the same score the Mustangs put on the board a week earlier. Both of those games were on the road.
Hermantown scored back-to-back goals late in the third period to break open a 2-1 game.
Thief River Falls got on the board first on an opening period goal by Michael Johnson.
It was a 1-1 tie at the first intermission, with the Hawks picking up the only goal of the second period.
Cole Koepke scored twice for the winners, who have finished as the Class A state tournament runner-up the past six years.
It was a 38-save day for Thief River Falls goalie Kade Nelson. Hermantown netminder Luke Olson stopped 21 shots.
