Thief River Falls wrestled its way to a fifth place finish in the 18-team Minnesota National Guard Prowler Invitational Saturday at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
“It was an up and down day,” said Thief River Falls coach Kenny Geiser. “We had some good wins, but some bad losses too. I would like to see more consistency overall, especially at this point in the season.”
Leading the Prowlers with second place finishes were cousins Cade Lundeen and Josh Bernier.
Lundeen fell 7-0 to Willie Meine of Fertile-Beltrami in the championship match at 120 pounds.
“Cade wrestled some tough matches,” Geiser said. “His semifinal win was a physical match that Cade did a great job of sticking with is offense. He just needs to work on not getting rattled by the top level kids like Meine to make it to the next level.”
Bernier came up one takedown short in a 9-8 loss in the 145-pound championship match against Nick Kaml of Badger/Greenbush-Middle River.
“Josh wrestled great with solid offense from his feet throughout the day,” Geiser said. “He made a few mistakes in the finals and Kaml capitalized on them. It was a great match and Josh came up just short, not for lack of effort though.”
Also placing for the Prowlers were Brenan Peralta and Connor Swanson, who finished in third place at 170 and 195 pounds, respectively; Noah Hawkins, fourth at 160; Hunter Roller, fifth at 182; Ethan Halvorson, fifth at 220; Jake Davis, seventh at 106; Cody Sele, seventh at 126; and Kyle Fowler, eighth at 138.
“Brenan is really looking good from his feet right now,” Geiser said. “He is moving well and seems to have gained some confidence.”
Geiser was also pleased with the strong performances turned in by Swanson and Roller.
“Connor Swanson had a great day,” Geiser said. “He wrestled very smart and aggressive throughout. Hunter had a really good finish to the tournament and has turned a corner. He has some great offense and is fun to watch.”
Section 8AA rival Bemidji won the team title with 201 points. Rounding out the top five were Ottertail Central with 161.5 points, Park Rapids Area 157, Badger/ Greenbush-Middle River 151.5; and the Prowlers 121.5.
