Overtime tie for Prowlers, Icebreakers

Both teams paid the price for penalties in Friday’s Thief River Falls girls high school hockey game against the St. Cloud Icebreakers at the Ralph Engelstad Arena that ended in a 4-4 stalemate.
Six of the eight goals were scored during a manpower advantage. The Prowlers were 3-for-3 on the power play; the Icebreakers went 3-for-4.
Thief River Falls took a 3-2 lead into the third period, but fell behind 4-3 on power play goals by St. Cloud’s Allie Cornelius, whose close-in shot got through at 8:11, and Maddie Smith, who was set up at the side of the net at 14:47.
The Prowlers responded, however, when Kira Johnson  scored a point-blank power play rebound goal at 15:32.
An eight-minute sudden-death overtime produced a 9-1 Thief River Falls advantage in shots-on-goal, but the score didn’t change.
The Icebreakers, who feature skaters from St. Cloud Tech, Apollo and Cathedral, plus Holdingford, got on the board first when a scramble in front of the net resulted in a Sommer Davidson goal just 1:21 into the game.
Next three goals were of the power play variety.
Thief River Falls’ Tessa Jorde popped one in from in front of the net at 3:02 and Callie Fagerstrom put the Prowlers ahead 2-1 at 12:08 after a St. Cloud skater was whistled for playing with a goalie stick.
The unusual call came after netminder Emily Musielewicz had lost her stick on a goal mouth bump. A teammate surrendered her stick to the goalie – standard fare in those situations. However, she proceeded to pick up the bigger piece of lumber and became involved in the play. A whistle and conference among the officials resulted in an unsportsmanlike conduct call.
St. Cloud got the equalizer, on a power play, of course with a well-placed pass being swept in by Cornelius at 14:02.
Thief River Falls was back on top 59 seconds into the second period when Madison Poole beat Musielewicz with an open shot from the slot.
The Prowlers out-shot the Icebreakers 45-15.
