Title game rematch in Section 8A boys hockey

Top-seeded Thief River Falls and second-seeded East Grand Forks will meet Thursday in the 2016 Section 8A boys high school hockey tournament championship game. It’s a 7 p.m. contest on the Green Wave home ice – the East Grand Forks Civic Center Arena.
Thief River Falls shut out No. 4 seed Detroit Lakes 4-0 and East Grand Forks got by No. 5 seed Warroad 3-2 in a Saturday semifinal doubleheader.
Thursday will be a rematch of the 2015 final when the Green Wave edged the Prowlers 4-3 in overtime at The Gardens in Warroad.
That was the third straight Section 8A title for East Grand Forks – the two-time defending Class A state champion.
Thief River Falls beat East Grand Forks twice during the regular season, skating to a 5-0 Jan. 19 win in a the Ralph Engelstad Arena, then picking up a 4-2 Feb. 9 rematch victory at the Civic Center.
Thursday’s winner will advance to the Class A state tournament that starts Wednesday, March 2, at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul.
Thief River Falls is looking to get back to the state tournament for the first time since 2012 – a year before the current East Grand Forks title run kicked in.

n Championship Thursday, Feb. 25 – Thief River Falls (21-6) vs. East Grand Forks (15-10-2).
