The Thief River Falls City Council appointed Jim Strandlie to the vacant seat of council member at large during a special council meeting the morning of Tuesday, March 1. Strandlie was expected to be sworn in at the regularly scheduled council meeting that evening.
Strandlie succeeds Ken Schmalz, who passed away unexpectedly Jan. 22. Strandlie will serve the remainder of Schmalz’s term, which is set to expire Dec. 31. Strandlie is retired from the education profession.
Strandlie was one of six candidates for the position. Strandlie and Jeff Kolb, branch manager of Wells Fargo in Thief River Falls, were the finalists for the position.
Other candidates included Anna Barth, an administrative assistant employed in Grand Forks, N.D.; Gail Boice, a retired technical writer at Arctic Cat; Max Kahlhamer, a flight instructor at the University of North Dakota; and Jerry Unruh, business owner. Another candidate was disqualified as the person didn’t provide a name and didn’t meet the requirements for the position.
