Thief River Falls – Shirley Kubicek of Thief River Falls, formerly of Bluff Siding, Wis., and Zephyrhills, Fla., passed away peacefully at Greenleaf Assisted Living in Thief River Falls on Sunday, April 17, at the age of 85.
A memorial service will be held at a later date in Winona, with burial at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.
Shirley May Rinn was born on May 12, 1930 in Winona, the youngest of six children born to Joseph and Verna (Paine) Rinn. She spent the majority of her life living in the Winona area.
On April 21, 1949 Shirley was united in marriage to James “Jim” Kubicek. The couple raised their family of two children in Bluff Siding, Wis.
Shirley worked at the College of St. Teresa in Winona for many years – first in the secretarial pool and then in the library until the college closed. She then worked in the library at Winona Senior High School until her retirement.
Shirley’s hobbies and interests included collecting frogs, crafting, gardening, camping, traveling, and spending time with family and friends. She loved spending time on the beautiful Mississippi River fishing with Jim. Shirley was an avid Green Bay Packer Fan.
Shirley is survived by her daughter, Barbara (Gerald) Okland of Thief River Falls; grandchildren Christopher (Sharie) Okland of Turtle River, Erik Okland of Sharpsburg, Pa., and Ellen Okland of Thief River Falls; great-grandchildren Alexander, Sebastian, Kjrsten, Emily, Laura, Samantha, Jennifer, Melissa, and Steven; great great-granddaughter, Rebecca; brother-in-law Charles Kubicek of Winona; sister-in-law Roseanne Kubicek; special friend of many years Carol Tarras of Winona; many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Jim; son Jamie in 1968; great-granddaughters Rebekkah in 1989 and Elizabeth in 2004; her parents and brothers and sisters.
