Kathryn “Kay” Fleegel, 95, of Thief River Falls, MN passed away on Saturday, June 11, 2016 at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND.
Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, MN with Father Rick Lambert presiding. Burial will follow at St. Bernard’s Cemetery, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service on Monday, June 20, 2016 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls. Visitation will also be held for one hour prior to the funeral at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church on Tuesday.
Kathryn Theresa Heltemes was born September 20, 1920 to John and Rose (Sprangers) Heltemes in Sauk Rapids, MN where she was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith. She graduated from Sauk Rapids High School in 1938.
Kathryn married Willard Fleegel, September 28, 1940. They made their home in Thief River Falls until moving to California in 1942 where they worked in an airplane factory. Returning to Thief River Falls in 1946, she worked at the Ben Franklin Store. In 1965, she was employed by School District #564, retiring in 1982 as Food Service Supervisor.
Kay was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church, the Ladies Guild, and Catholic Daughters of America. Kay can be described as generous, organized, classy, fashionably dressed, friendly and she carried herself with dignity and beauty. She was a gracious hostess who enjoyed entertaining family and friends. She was also an excellent cook and baker. Kay was a good card player, especially Bridge, and has followed the Minnesota Twins since her youth.
She is survived by her loving daughter, Becky (Jim) Anderson, Wenatchee, WA; daughter-in-law, Stephanie Fleegel of Grafton, ND and her daughter, Trinity; 6 grandchildren, Sarah (Lee) Averbeck, Minneapolis, MN, Tim (Kristin) Fleegel, New Hope, MN, Bryan (Tanya) Fleegel, Sartell, MN, Ryan (Kayla) Anderson, Bellingham, WA, Jared (Kandice) Anderson, Post Falls, ID and Emily Anderson of Wenatchee, WA; great grandchildren, Sophie, Elin & Grayson Fleegel and Fritz & Elise Averbeck; sisters-in-law, Joelle Stanoch, Sartell, MN and Jean Fleegel, Brandon, FL; and many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Willard in 2000; sons, Billy Fleegel in 1960 and Bob in 2014; her parents; two brothers, Earl (Gertie) Heltemes and John Heltemes; an infant sister, Lorraine Heltemes; and sisters, Laverne (Paul) Studenski, Duane (Charlie) Martin and Bernice (Joe) Studer.
