Godfred Svir

    Thief River Falls – Godfred Svir of Thief River Falls, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 2, 2016 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls, at the age of 87.
    Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 9, 2016 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Ben Carlsen officiating. Interment will follow at the Barnett National Cemetery, Roseau County.
    Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. with an 8 p.m. prayer service Monday, Aug. 8 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls. Visitation will also take place one hour prior to the funeral service on Tuesday at the church.
    Godfred Joe Svir was born July 7, 1929, the son of Eddie and Annie (Rachel) Svir in Barnett Township, Roseau County, where he attended school.
    The family owned a dairy and grain farm in Barnett Township. Godfred helped on the farm until 1951 when he moved to Thief River Falls. Godfred worked for Pennington County as assistant engineer from November 1951 to December 1988 and retired after 37 years with the county. He then worked for Nyflot Car Wash for 6½ years, the Thief River Golf Course, and Forsberg’s till July 12, 2000, at which time he totally retired.
     Godfred enjoyed deer hunting with his cross bow and his old 30-30 (his favorite saying at deer camp was “hold the light higher.”)  He also enjoyed playing card games with his grandkids, attending and cheering on his grandkids at all their sporting events and doing yard work.    
    Godfred married Beatrice Forst on Oct. 19, 1952 at Badger Creek Free Lutheran Church in Badger. They made their home in Thief River Falls and in 1977 designed and built their home in Rocksbury Township in Pennington County.
    Godfred and Beatrice had six children: Shar (Blaine) Ternes, Godfred Allen (Gloria) Svir, and Becky Rogalla all of Thief River Falls; Cindy (Neil) Steinhauer of Roosevelt; Roberta (William) Russell of Fargo, N.D.; and Stacy Svir of Mankato; 15 grandchildren Shannon (Christina) Ternes, Brieanna (Ben) Speldrick, Jason (Sheri) Svir, Bradley (Lynel) Svir, Kylie Rogalla, Shawna Rogalla, Christopher (Carol Geisser) Steinhauer, Heather (Todd Overvold) Steinhauer, Adam Steinhauer, Charles (Manda Cariveau) Steinhauer, David Russell, Elizabeth Russell, Megan Svir and Zachary Svir; 10 great grandchildren William Ternes, Mason Ternes, Caleb Svir, Brody Svir, Kendra Svir, Madison Svir, Nicholas Svir, Nichole Geisser, Alexis Steinhauer, Noah Dybedahl and Anabella Steinhauer.
    Godfred is survived by his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, four sisters:  Barbara McFarlane in Roseau, Rose (John) Massey of Woodbridge, Va., Agnes Johnson of Port Saint Lucie, Fla., and Vivian Peterson of Badger. Also, his forever loyal German shepherd, “Pooch.”
    Godfred was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Beatrice, and two brothers, Jerry and John.
