Tech takes 6-1 8AA match-up

Top-ranked St. Cloud Tech stopped Thief River Falls 6-1 Friday in the Section 8AA girls high school tennis team tournament semifinals.
The Tigers followed with a 7-0 championship match victory over Brainerd, a 4-3 semifinal winner over Willmar.
Thief River Falls’ lone win against Tech came at No. 3 doubles, where senior Allie Okeson and junior Josie Davis outlasted juniors Courtney Donnely and Natalie Kuntz 5-7, 7-6 (4), 11-9.
“We played okay, not great,” said Thief River Falls coach Matt Okeson. “Girls battled hard, but ran into a team that has very good athletes who play tennis well.”
The rest of the Prowlers’ line-up featured junior Karryn Leake, No. 1 singles; junior Kira Beier, No. 2 singles; sophomore Hailey Kvick, No. 3 singles; freshman Bella Nelson, No. 4 singles; senior Kora Torkelson and freshman Khloe Lund, No. 1 doubles; seniors Callie Fagerstrom and Shawna Spears, No. 2 doubles.
“They (Tech) have a great team,” said Okeson. “Our goal was to make sure they knew they were playing a very good team from Thief River Falls.  The girls did that. We had a very good start, but the Tech girls were just too much. They play a very tough schedule and see teams like us almost every time out.”
While the Prowlers had only four seniors in their ten-player tournament line-up, the Tigers started just two upperclassmen.
Section 8AA team qualifiers advanced from North and South bracket competition.
Courts Plus in Fargo, N.D., hosted the Friday matches.
It was a 19-4 dual meet season for the Prowlers.
“As a coaching staff we felt that again, we raised the level of play again this year, and that’s always fun to see as a program continues to grow,” noted Okeson. “We say goodby to 14 seniors this year who have been the foundation of this program for the past few years.”
