Pequot Lakes stymies TRF running game

Running portion of the Thief River Falls run-pass option offense was stymied by the Pequot Lakes defense, and as a result the Prowlers’ regular season high school football home finale was a 34-14 Friday night loss to the Patriots.
Thief River Falls’ ground game netted a mere 50 yards and the Prowlers’ total yardage was just 149. Pequot Lakes, on the other hand, rushed for 209 yards and hit the 400 figure overall.
Much of that can be attributed to the Patriots’ control up front, both on offense and defense.
“I love our kids, but we’re just not able to line up and play smash-mouth football with anybody,” admitted Thief River Falls coach Jeff Mumm. “We’re not able to handle teams up front.”
The loss put the Prowlers at 2-5 heading into the final game of the regular season tonight (Wednesday) at Detroit Lakes. The Patriots improved to 4-3.
Despite their shortcomings in the ground game, the Prowlers were still very much in the contest at halftime when they trailed only 14-8.
First touchdown of the night did not occur until the second play of the second quarter.
After stopping Pequot Lakes on downs at the Thief River Falls 5-yard line, the Prowlers found themselves right back in the same predicament after a short pop-up punt went out of bounds at their 23.
Eight plays later Deven Psyck scored standing up on a four-yard run off left tackle. The same play to the right side worked for the conversion.
Unable to sustain a drive, Thief River Falls went long distance to tie it as Christian Larson took a swing pass 41 yards for a touchdown and Derick Newland made a highlight reel catch on the conversion pass. The PAT toss into the left corner off the end zone was batted up in the air, but landed on the stomach of the intended receiver, who was flat on his back when the ball came down.
A next-possession drive that covered 75 yards in ten plays put Pequot Lakes back in front 14-8 as Max Tangen found a wide open Maxx Schindel over the middle on a 21-yard touchdown pass with 62 seconds left in the first half.
Pequot Lakes opened up a 20-8 lead on its first possession of the second half. The touchdown came from Pysck, who bounced off tackles inside on a 6-yard scoring run. “We missed a lot of tackles,” acknowledged Mumm.
Thief River Falls came right back with its only sustained drive of the night – a nine-play, 76-yard march that ended with Noah Hawkins running hard up the middle from 21 yards out to make it 20-14 with 5:47 remaining in the third quarter.
“We make the plays at times, but we’re just not consistent,” noted Mumm.
One play into the fourth it was 28-14.
A fumble recovery at the Thief River Falls 27 by defensive tackle Delvon Bell was followed eight plays later by a 3-yard Psyck carry for the touchdown. He also went up the middle on the conversion.
Pequot Lakes tacked on a touchdown with 8:05 to play when Tangen and Dylin Ackerman hooked up on an eight-yard touchdown pass.
“Pequot Lakes has a nice football team,” offered Mumm.
