Hermantown was all over Thief River Falls Friday, out-shooting the Prowlers 42-4 en route to a one-sided 9-0 boys high school hockey win at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Jacob Herter scored four goals and Ryan Sandelin came up with three goals and an assist to lead the defending Class A state champion Hawks’ offense.
While the winners were peppering Thief River Falls goalie Nick Corneliusen with shots from start to finish, Hermantown netminder Cade McEwen had an easy time of it. Over 12 minutes had been played before McEwen touched the puck for the first time – on a shot that would have been an icing call if it would not have been on net.
Thief River Falls had one legitimate scoring opportunity all night: a shot from in front by Parker Lane with 5:33 left in the game.
Hermantown scored three goals in each period. They got off 14 shots in the first period, 10 in the second and finished with an 18-shot third period barrage that occurred with running time in effect.
Brady Baker and Tyler Watkins were also goal-scorers for the Hawks. Sam High collected three assists.
The loss dropped the Prowlers to 4-4.
Thief River Falls and Hermantown have met 14 times over the past 12 years and the Prowlers have yet to beat the Hawks. The two teams did play to one tie.
Hermantown has made seven straight state tournament trips, finishing second six times before winning in 2016.
