Two power play goals and a 32-save performance by netminder Mckenzie Whalen carried East Grand Forks to a 2-1 win over Thief River Falls in a Thursday girls high school hockey game at the Ralph Engelstad Arena.
Results evened the season series between the two Section 8A rivals. Thief River Falls won a 6-2 Dec. 8 match-up at the East Grand Forks Civic Center.
It was the third straight loss for the 12-6 Prowlers, who were playing for the first time in two weeks. They have a Tuesday road game against defending Section 8A champion Warroad, a 3-2 winner when the two teams met Dec. 13.
East Grand Forks scored first when Madison McDonald tapped in a rebound at 6:09 of the opening period.
While Whalen stood tall in the Green Wave nets, an error on her part allowed the Prowlers to tie the game late in the first period. She tried to smother a long shot by Thief River Falls forward Shelby Breiland, but the puck trickled under her and crawled across the goal line at 15:51.
The game winner came at 10:28 of the second period when Ashley Ayotte scored from a pack of players gathered in front of Thief River Falls goalie Mariah Nelson.
Six minutes later, back-to-back calls put Thief River Falls into a 5-on-3 penalty kill for 67 seconds. They got out of that jam and pushed for the equalizer over the final three minutes, only to be turned back by Whalen.
Nelson was pulled in favor of an extra attacker with 55 seconds left. The Prowlers came close on a scramble in front of Whalen with 12 seconds to play, and after an icing call with 6.5 seconds on the clock, another quick flurry around the East Grand Forks net kept the issue in doubt until the horn sounded.
Nelson finished the night with 13 saves.
