Gatzke – Arvin Dahl, 87, passed away on Tuesday, April 4, 2017 at Sanford Hospital in Thief River Falls.
    Funeral services were held on Monday, April 10, 2017 at United Lutheran Church, Gatzke, with Rev. Bob Dahlen officiating. Burial will follow at a later date in Moose River Cemetery, Gatzke.
    Arvin Ernest Dahl was born August 16, 1929 to Emil and Pauline “Polly” (Wolden) Dahl on the family farm. Arvin lived all of his life on the Dahl Century Farm in rural Middle River.  He was baptized at Moose River Church and confirmed at Landstad Church in Gatzke. He attended Clover Lawn Country School (District #80).
    In 1952, Arvin entered into the US Army honorably serving his country through 1954. He received basic training in Georgia and was stationed in Germany during his last year in the Army.  He helped lay cable for communications throughout Germany.
    Following his military service, Arvin returned home and began farming with his father. The next year his father Emil died and Arvin and his brothers, Orlan and Larry took over the family farm. They had dairy and beef cattle along with a grain farm. During this time, Arvin lived with his mom, Polly until her passing in 1981.
    Arvin was a confirmed bachelor until he was 55 years old when he re-united with an old classmate of his, Marvel Lenora (Lian) Canfield. They married June 15, 1985 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Aitkin.
    Arvin and Marvel made their home on the farm near Gatzke. Arvin continued farming until handing the farm down to his nephew, Donavon Dahl in 2005.  
    Arvin enjoyed ice fishing at Frank’s on Lake of the Woods. For many years he hunted with his brothers and brothers-in-law. He also enjoyed riding his snowcat and four-wheeler.
    Arvin enjoyed playing the accordion with “The Green Green Grass of Home” as one of his favorites. He and Marvel enjoyed camping and traveling – especially a long trip to Alaska in 1992. For many years they enjoyed going to Høstfest in Minot and the Rollag Threshing Bee.
    Arvin was a member of the American Legion Post #444 in Middle River, and a lifelong member of United Lutheran Church in Gatzke.  
    He is survived by his wife, Marvel of Middle River; step-children, Dellwin Canfield, Aitkin, Linda (friend, Ron) Mikush, Isanti, Russell (Janel) Canfield, Aitkin, Larry (Kelly) Canfield, Blaine; step-grandchildren, Jeffrey, Krista, Valerie, Daniel, Kimberly, Jamie, Gregory, Lori, Kristin, and Jonathon; several step great-grandchildren; brother, Larry (Erma) Dahl, Middle River; sister, Janet (Duane) Lian, Grygla; brothers-in-law, Erling Lian of Gatzke and Keith (Linda) Lian of Minneapolis; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.  
    Arvin was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Orlan and Elmer Dahl; sisters and brothers-in-law, Anna (Evert) Westberg, Esther (Edward Schmidt & Joe) Wiedholz, Cora (Bill) Massof, and Mavis (Norman) Roppe; niece, Lynn Dahl; nephew, Darell Westberg; brother-in-law, Leroy Lian; and sister-in-law, JoJean Monson.
