    Burnsville & Thief River Falls
– Norris Melander, 85, of Burnsville, formerly of Thief River Falls, passed away peacefully at his home from lung cancer surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, July 13, 2017.
    Visitation will be held on Friday, July 21, 2017 at 10 a.m. with a Celebration of Life at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow. All will take place at Church of St. Peter, 1405 Highway 13, Mendota, MN 55150.
    Norris Melander was born on May 29, 1932 to Aaron and Agnes Melander. He grew up on a farm in Hunter, ND. He attended and graduated from the University of North Dakota with a degree in Accounting. He married his high school sweetheart, Marlene Hansen and they continued to live in Grand Forks while he finished his degree.
    Norris had a work ethic second to none. He started out in Thief River Falls working as an accountant.  He was an avid entrepreneur involved in numerous business ventures and prided himself on making a deal with a handshake.
    In 1963 he purchased Home Lumber Company in Thief River Falls, which he later expanded to stores in Stephen, and Grand Forks, ND. Throughout his years in Thief River Falls, Norris continued to either own or become a partner in businesses such as the Best Western, Falls Concrete, and The Junior Shop.  
    Norris later sold the Home Lumber locations in Thief River Falls, Stephen, and Grand Forks and moved to the Twin Cities where he became a partner and later sole owner of HarNed Lumber in Bloomington. A year later he opened Home Lumber Company in South St Paul and merged the two companies as well as opened a location in Delano. He was a former President of the Northwestern Lumber Association.
    Norris was happiest outside working with his family in his yard and tending to his gardens. Norris and Marlene enjoyed spending winters in Ft. Meyers, Florida. He spent the last years of his life living in Burnsville.
    He is survived by son Murray (Carol) and their children Matt and Derek (Jessica); son Mark (DeeDee) and their children Ian (Lindsay), Brock  (fiancĂ© Emily) and McKenzie; and daughter Julie Crippes  (James) and their children Jack, Sarah, Thomas and Daniel; and great-grandchild Decklan Melander (Ian). Also survived by twin bother Morris and younger brother Allan.
    He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marlene, daughter Shawn, parents Aaron and Agnes, siblings Rosemary, James, Leroy and Dennis.
     In lieu of flowers, memorials preferred to a hospice of your choice.
