Newfolden – Marcel Douglas, 94 of Newfolden,  died peacefully on Sunday, July 23, 2017 at his home surrounded by his loving family.
    Funeral service will be at  10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 29, 2017 at Evangelical Free Church, Newfolden, with Pastor Gary Barrett officiating. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Newfolden.
    Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service on Friday, July 28, 2017 at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls.  Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
    Marcel Joseph Douglas was born March 25, 1923 at home on the family farm near Stephen, the son of Albert and Sarah (Dufault) Douglas. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Stephen. Marcel attended country school in Parker Township and high school in Argyle, for one year. He then went to work on the family farm.
    On February 16, 1942 Marcel was united in marriage to Margaret “Margie” Verbout at St. Stephen Catholic Church, Stephen.  They made their home on the Douglas family farm near Stephen. To this union five children were born: Gary, Sandra, Michael, Karen and Jon. They eventually took over the farm and during that time, Marcel also worked at the Ford Garage in Stephen as a mechanic.
    For several winters, Marcel went to work at Franz Manufacturing and later Northwestern Steel & Wire, both in Sterling, IL.
    In 1960 Marcel purchased the John Deere Implement dealership in Stephen, which he owned and operated until 1967. Marcel then went to work as a welder at Arctic Cat where he spent the next 14 years. Margie died in an automobile accident in 1975.
    While working at Arctic Cat, Marcel met Gertrude Wilcox and the couple married on March 11, 1977 at the Evangelical Free Church, Newfolden. To this union, David, Peggy, Patty, Jamie, Julie and Tami became his children also.  They made their home in Newfolden. In 1980, Marcel went to work at Newfolden Co-op Oil and retired as manager after serving for 20 years.
    He enjoyed riding motorcycle, fishing, and spending time at his cabin at Springsteel at Lake of the Woods. He and Margie also enjoyed traveling together.  Over the years, Marcel and Gertrude enjoyed trips to Alaska, California and Texas to visit family. He was a member of Evangelical Free Church, Newfolden, where he served as usher. Marcel was proud of the fact he knew so many people and they always remembered him.
    Survivors include children, Gary (Jean) Douglas, New Richmond, WI, Sandra (Dwaine) Rud, Stephen, Michael (Cheri) Douglas, Stephen, Karen Obermann, Anchorage, AK, and Jon Douglas, Anchorage, AK; step-children, Peggy (Vernon) Gunderson, Patty (Jerome) Nelson, Tami Wilcox all of Newfolden, Jamie (Mike) Distel of Viking, and Julie (Corey) Skjerven of Thief River Falls; 12 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren and 28 step-great-grandchildren; and many friends.
    He is preceded in death by his wife, Margie; his wife, Gertrude; and one grandson, David Rud; step-granddaughter, Kari Gunderson; and one step-son, David Wilcox.
    Special thanks to Marcel’s granddaughter Jill and her husband Jason Edin for all their work and loving care in making Grandpa Marcel comfortable and loved.
