    Thief River Falls – Irwin Johnson, 92, of Thief River Falls, died peacefully on Friday, September 8, 2017 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls.
    Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, with Rev. Darrel Cory officiating.  Burial will follow at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls. Military honors will be provided by the Ecklund-Holmstrom American Legion Post #117, Veterans Of Foreign Wars Post #2793 and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.  
    Visitation will be held one hour prior to the funeral on Friday at the church.
    Irwin Russell Johnson was born on May 12, 1925 in Wylie, (Polk Centre Township) on the family farm the son of J. Edward and Edith E. (Scholin) Johnson. He was baptized and confirmed at Black River Lutheran Church in Polk Centre Township, Pennington County. Irwin attended District #94 Poplar Grove rural school and graduated in 1942 from Northwest school of Agriculture at Crookston.  
    On October 31, 1945, Irwin entered into service with the United States Navy. He served aboard the USS Providence as a Fire Controlman Third Class and got to tour the Mediterranean Sea. Irwin was awarded the World War Two Victory Medal and American Area Campaign Medal. Irwin was Honorably Discharged on October 13, 1947.
    On June 29, 1952 Irwin was united in marriage to Pearl Olive Peterson at Silverton Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls. The couple made their home near Rosewood in December of 1953 and to this union three children were born: Dwight, Neil and Lyle.  
    On the Johnson Farm, the family had dairy cattle, chickens and hogs, and they raised small grains, alfalfa and corn. Later, Irwin worked as a wholesale produce and grocery salesman at Gamble Robinson, Inc. (later to become Food Services of America) for 30 years.  
    Irwin was a member and served on the church council at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #117 and Eagle’s Club in Thief River Falls. He was Treasurer of New Solum Township from 1959-1997, Agassiz Swedish Heritage Society Board member from 1996-2002, volunteered at the Heritage Senior Center where Irwin and Pearl delivered meals for many years.  He was also a member of the Sons of Norway.  
    Survivors include his loving wife of 65 years, Pearl of Thief River Falls; sons, Dwight (Bonnie) Johnson of Thief River Falls, Neil (Rose) Johnson of Boardman, OR and Lyle Johnson of Thief River Falls; 8 grandchildren, Teresa (Jonathan) Hopke, Amy (Milt) Green, Katrina (Lance) Hapka, Kristina (Steve) Wiseth, Cindy (Shawn) Edman, Brad Johnson, Chad (Lauren Smith) Johnson, Jace Johnson; 16 great-grandchildren; brother, Clifton (Phyllis) Johnson of Texas; and several nieces, nephews, family and friends.
    Irwin is preceded in death by his parents; an infant brother; great-grandchild in infancy, Daylon Green; and sister-in-law Patsy Johnson.
