Thief River Falls battled defending Section 8AA champion Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton to a 1-1 stalemate for two sets before the reigning section champs took control and won the final two sets Thursday night.
“We played well tonight,” said head Coach Kerri Wichael. “We worked harder than we’ve had to work and we knew that coming into this game. I told them not to hang their heads and to be proud of what they put out there tonight.”
Thief River Falls trailed by as many as six points in the first set before it began a comeback. The Prowlers cut the Rebels’ lead to as few as three points but couldn’t get any closer in a 25-22 first set loss.
The Prowlers also trailed by six early in the second set before mounting a comeback. The Prowlers came back from a 12-6 deficit to win the second set 25-20.
DGF led 7-5 early in the third set when it went on a 9-1 scoring run to take a 10-point lead. Following a timeout, Thief River Falls got a much-needed side-out and briely cut the lead to eight points. The Rebels eventually regained control and won the third set 25-12.
The Prowlers appeared fatigued at the end of the third set but they battled for every point in the fourth set. The Prowlers led 13-12 about halfway through the set, with the Rebels outscoring the Prowlers 13-3 down the stretch to claim a four-set victory.
“We knew that it was going to be a tough game and we expect to see them again down the road,” Wichael said. “We started slow, which is something that we are trying to get away from. We recovered well and we fought for a lot of it, but we fought from behind for most of it.”
