Kmart to close in January

    The Thief River Falls Kmart store is expected to close permanently in January.
    On Thursday, Nov. 2, Sears Holdings released a list of 45 Kmart and 18 Sears stores closing in late January. The Thief River Falls Kmart store was on the list. According to a Sears Holdings press release, employees at the Thief River Falls store were notified Thursday. The Thief River Falls Sears store wasn’t on the list.
    Also on Thursday, The Times was notified that the store closing ad campaign was scheduled to begin Thursday, Nov. 9 and anticipated to end Jan. 28, 2018.
    “Sears Holdings continues its strategic assessment of the productivity of our Kmart and Sears store base and will continue to right size our store footprint in number and size. In the process, as previously announced, we will continue to close some unprofitable stores as we transform our business model so that our physical store footprint and our digital capabilities match the needs and preferences of our members.”
    The press release further stated, “Eligible associates impacted by these store closures will receive severance and will have the opportunity to apply for open positions at area Kmart or Sears stores.”
