Viking – Ruth Sustad, 98 of Viking passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2020 at Minnesota Greenleaf in Thief River Falls.
The funeral to celebrate Ruth’s life will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2020 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls with Pastor Jim Robberstad officiating. Visitation will be from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Thursday. Burial will be at the Viking Cemetery. Please wear your mask and practice social distancing.
Ruth Mae Peterson was born May 23, 1922 in Oakes, ND the daughter of Carl and Lilabelle Joy (VanOrnum) Peterson. She graduated from Akeley High School with the class of 1941 and then moved to Minneapolis where she worked for Honeywell.
On June 15, 1949, Ruth was united in marriage to LeRoy Sustad at the First Covenant Church in Minneapolis. They made their home on a farm near Viking where they raised their children, Daniel and Peggy Ann. They continued to farm throughout the years; there she raised chickens and sold eggs to various friends in the area, worked long hours in the garden, canning and baking. The coffee pot was always on along with caramel rolls and chocolate chip cookies.
When they retired, “Toots and Honey Datsus” enjoyed traveling Alaska, Hawaii, Sweden, camping, attending various Bible camps. Ruth was a member of the Viking Covenant Church, active with the Viking Covenant Women Ministries and Sunday School. She will be remembered for her love for the Lord, putting her faith and trust in Him.
Ruth is survived by her loving children, Daniel (Donna) Sustad of Viking and PeggyAnn Hogberg-Lunke of Middle River; 7 grandchildren, Dayna (Kraig) Melvie, Dawn (Cory) Gustafson, Holly Vad, Jennifer (Brant) Johnson, Blake (fiancé, Macy Burks) Sustad, Bradley (Jessica) Sustad and Corey (Anna) Hogberg; great-grandchildren; Alexis, Kasey, Kinzie, Dylan, Tyson, Kylie, McKayla, Hailey, Courtney, Hunter, Chesney, McKenna, Aubrie, Kendrick, Cameron; brother, George Peterson of Minneapolis; sister, Jan (Richard) Adams of Maine; and many other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, LeRoy; parents; grandparents; 5 brothers, Linus Peterson, Lewis Peterson, Harry Peterson, Calvin Peterson, Walter Peterson; sons-in-law, Daniel Hogberg and Don Lunke.
