Apple Valley – Lloyd Olson went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 5, 2021 with his family by his side at the age of 98 years old.
Lloyd Vernon Olson was born on August 19, 1922 in Thief River Falls, to Oscar and Bertha (Knutson) Olson. He was baptized and confirmed at the Lutheran church in Goodridge.
He attended elementary school in Goodridge and Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls. After high school he went to Longview, Washington and worked for Long Bell Lumber Company.
Lloyd enlisted in the Navy in August 1942. He served in the North Atlantic on the destroyer escort, the Rueben James II, until November 1945. During his service, he had many experiences that he enjoyed retelling.
He met Joyce Filpula in 1949 and they were married June 11, 1950 in a country church outside of Thief River Falls. They moved to Minneapolis for a few months while he finished telegraphy school. After completing school, they moved to Vancouver, Washington and he worked for an auto parts store in Portland, Oregon. They moved back to Thief River Falls where he worked for Northern Woodwork for 31 years. He was a skilled cabinet maker and made beautiful pieces of furniture for banks, schools and offices.
Lloyd and Joyce welcomed four children into the family: Rebecca, Debra, Keith and Kristi.
Lloyd’s favorite pastimes included hunting, fishing, taking walks in the woods and reading.
They moved to Lakeville in 1989 and Apple Valley in 2004 where they still reside. Before retiring, Lloyd worked a few years as a cabinet maker at Carlson Store Fixtures in Farmington.
Lloyd is survived by his wife of 70 years, Joyce, of Apple Valley; daughters Becky Brown (Bruce) of Lakeville, Debbie Frey (Marty) of Lakeville, Kristi Miller (Paul) of Mansfield, Texas and son Keith (Terry) of Carver; nine grandchildren (Wendy, Kellie, Beth, Amanda, Andy, Bethany, Brandon, Seth and Maija); seven great-grandchildren (Gage, Madeline, Bailey, Daphne, Elowen, Gabe, Melody and Cal) and his sister, Grace Dixon of Newberg, Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar and Bertha Olson and 10 brothers and sisters. May his memory be blessed.
A funeral service was held on Friday, January 8, 2021 at White Funeral Home, 14560 Pennock Ave, Apple Valley.
