Minneapolis – On Friday, May 14, 2021 David Allen Klopp, loving husband and father of three, passed away at the age of 79.
David was born on August 12, 1941 in Thief River Falls, the youngest of Christian and Hilda (Holst) Klopp’s four children. He attended Northrop Elementary and Lincoln High School before enlisting in the US Navy, serving on ships based out of Japan and South Korea from 1958 to 1962. David married Barbara Stromberg of Thief River Falls in 1967.
David had a transportation themed career; working on the ore boats of the Great Lakes, serving as a flight instructor and charter pilot, culminating in 32 years in the “family business” joining his father Christ, father-in-law Willard, and brother Floyd in working for for the Soo Line Railroad. After retirement in 2003, he enjoyed travel, cycling, and working on house and yard projects, before moving to Minneapolis in 2016.
He was an avid reader of science and natural history, a Sudoku enthusiast, a MN Twins fan, and a lover of ginger snaps. Always ready with a quick retort, his good humor, sense of fairness, and earnest curiosity will be greatly missed.
David was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Floyd and Donnie; and sister, Alice (Kenneth) Aase.
He is survived by wife, Barbara; daughters, Ingrid (Anthony) Mello of Glenwood, Kirsten (Clinton) Berglof of Monticello; son, Evan of St.Paul; and grandchildren, Anna, Joe and Kajsa.
Memorials are preferred to iCan Shine (icanshine.org), an organization that helps those with disabilities learn how to ride a bike.
A celebration of life will follow this fall in Thief River Falls.
