Tampa Bay, FL – It is with great sadness that the family of Jami Kay Hanson announces her passing on Saturday, June 18, 2022 after a short battle with an aggressive late stage cancer.
Jami was born in Grand Forks, ND. She later moved and attended schools in Bemidji, Erskine, Waubun and Thief River Falls. She played saxophone and was a cheerleader in Waubun and was on the tennis team in Waubun and Thief River Falls. She also played ladies softball in Thief River. She graduated from Lincoln High School in 1981 and went on to attend Moorhead State University and Northland Community College where she earned her cosmetology certification. She later substitute taught for the cosmetology department at Northland Community College.
Jami loved hair, shoes, jewelry and music. As a teenager she was always styling clothing and her hair, singing to her favorite records and even took guitar lessons with her dad. She made sure her younger sisters had the latest hairstyles and looked picture-perfect for homecoming and prom. Upon getting her cosmetology license in Minnesota she worked for Hair Dynamics, The Barbers and later opened her own salon, Studio 213. Jami had an unmatched work ethic and loved home improvement and decorating projects. She put her signature touch on her homes.
Later in life she entertained her need-for-speed with a Harley Davidson Softail Deluxe and a Camaro SS convertible. Jami was outgoing and had many life-long friends. One of her favorite memories was of a 2011 trip to the Sturgis Bike Rally with her high school friends.
Jami married Lonni Peterson (1987-2002). Jami, her daughter, Jazmin, and the couple’s son, Mavrik, made their homes in Middle River, and Thompson, ND.
Jami later lived in Grand Forks, ND and Bismarck, ND. She spent the last eight years near her parents and sisters in Tampa Bay, FL and enjoyed visits from her son Mavrik and family with excursions to local attractions Disney World and Busch Gardens. She also loved visiting her grandchildren in North Dakota. While in Florida, Jami earned her real estate license and was an office manager at MWI Pumps.
Jami, 59, is survived by her children, Jazmin (Ty) Gensrich of Bismarck, ND and Mavrik (Audrey) Peterson of Grand Forks, ND; her parents, David and Kay Hanson of Lithia, FL; sisters, Kari (Pete) Hanson-Hidalgo of Belleair, FL and Tana (Steve) Montgomery of Lithia, FL.; beloved grandchildren, Lykken, Jaxson, Veda, Adaire, Corbin and Lydia; nephew and niece, Tephen and Aspen; and furry kids, Scruffy and Sissy.
A celebration of life for Jami will be held in Thief River Falls, later this summer.
