Thief River Falls – Maynard W. Peters, 82, Thief River Falls, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 2, 2023 at Thief River Care Center in Thief River Falls.
Maynard Willis Peters was born in Thief River Falls, April 6, 1940 to Orville J. and Lenelle (Sackett) Peters. He was baptized and confirmed at Viking Covenant Church. Maynard graduated from Lincoln High School and then enlisted in the US Army on January 18, 1962 and was honorably discharged on December 17, 1965. On January 11, 1964 Maynard was united in marriage to Shirley Kay Howard.
He worked at Red Owl for many years and later started working for Frito Lay in Thief River Falls. Later, Maynard bought the grocery store in St. Hilaire and operated it until it burned down. He then bought the grocery store in Oklee, which he operated with his wife until they sold it several years later. Maynard then worked for Hugo’s in Thief River Falls as produce manager for a number of years before retiring in 2005. After his retirement he did volunteer driving for Pennington County and RTC of Crookston.
Maynard enjoyed working in his yard and woodworking and especially enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Maynard is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, Thief River Falls; children, Orville (Carol) Peters, Buffalo, Malinda (Nathan) Bukowski, Middle River, and Wanda (Gary) Wright, Oklee; grandchildren, Cory (Courtney) Habiger, Tyler Peters, Sami (Clay) Bursch, Teshia (Trenton) Mugaas, Dan (Karlie Miller) Wright, James Wright, Dennis (Morgan) Bukowski, and Rachel Bukowski; many great-grandchildren; sister, Sharon (Duane) Chader, Madison Lake; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Keith Peters; granddaughter, Bree Peters; daughter-in-law, Darlene Peters; mother, Lenelle Peters; father, Orville Peters; and his paternal and maternal grandparents.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with the service to celebrate Maynard’s life at 11 a.m. on Monday, January 9, 2023 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls, with Pastor Ollie Urdahl officiating. Burial will follow at Viking Cemetery, Viking. Military honors will be provided by the Ekelund-Holmstrom American Legion Post 117, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard.
