Thief River Falls – Lester “John” Larson, 76, of Thief River Falls, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, February 15, 2023 at his residence.
Lester John Larson was born September 19, 1946 at Mercy Hospital in Thief River Falls, the son of Lester Richard and Ella Amanda (Holden) Larson. He was baptized and confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church. John attended Northrup Elementary and graduated from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls.
On February 18, 1967, John was united in marriage to Carol Faye Iverson at Oak Ridge Lutheran Church and to this union two children were born, Crystal and Tracey. The family made their home in Numedal Township, rural Thief River Falls.
Together, John and Carol owned and operated Carol’s Café for many years.
John served honorably for several years in the Minnesota Army National Guard.
In his early years, John worked at the Holiday Gas Station and eventually became the owner/operator of the Mobil Gas Station in Thief River Falls. John also was a bartender at the Municipal Liquor Store and drove milk truck for Bridgeman’s until his retirement in 1991.
John was united in marriage to Barbara Elaine Helgeland in 2005 and they enjoyed traveling, camping, and spending time outdoors.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, outdoor sports and had a great sense of humor. He dearly loved his family and especially enjoyed time with his grandchildren. John was passionate about collecting coins and guns. For 25 years he hosted and organized the Thief River Falls Gun Show.
John was a member of MN Deer Hunters Association, Eagle’s Club, and American Legion Post 117.
Survivors include his daughter, Crystal Larson of Maple Grove; grandchildren, Hailey (Michael Jorstad) Larson, Ella Larson and Emalee Sibley; step-son, Scott Helgeland; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Carol in 2004; wife, Barb in 2019; son, Tracey in 2016; grandson, Johnathon Larson; parents; sisters, Patricia (Russell) Krider and Debrah Larson.
A celebration of life service will be announced at a later date.
