– Mavis A. Besserud passed away on February 27, 2023 at the Thief River Falls Care Center. She was 86.
Mavis was born in Greenbush on May 24, 1936, the daughter of Hiram and Alyda (Helgeson) Erickson. She attended school in Duxby and Roseau, graduating from Roseau High School.
Mavis married John Besserud on December 22, 1953 in Roseau. After John was honorably discharged from the Army they moved to Crookston. After a short time they moved to Thief River Falls where they raised their six children.
Over the years Mavis worked at Arctic Cat, Oakland Park Nursing Home, and CNC in Thief River Falls.
Mavis loved country music, antiquing, and gardening. She was an excellent cook and baker who could make anything taste good. Everyone knew and loved her potato salad. Lutefisk was a big part of Christmas dinners and she would always make dinner for Christmas and Thanksgiving.
She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls and the American Legion Auxiliary.
Family was the most important thing in her life. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Mavis is survived by her children, Deb (Mark) Bernhardson of Cloquet, Steven Besserud of Thief River Falls, Scott (Rhonda) Besserud of Thief River Falls, and Darsey (Todd) Lewis of Winger; sister, Kathy Oberg of Red Wing; 19 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John; oldest daughter, Rhonda; and oldest son, Stuart.
A Funeral Service for Mavis Besserud will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023 at Rose Free Lutheran Church in Roseau at 11 a.m. with a visitation an hour prior. Interment will be held at Moe-Rose Cemetery in Roseau.
