Holt – Mildred “Millie” Horien, 87, of Holt, passed away on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at Hillcrest Senior Living, Red Lake Falls, with her loving husband by her side.
Mildred Irene Horien “Millie” was born July 26, 1935 to Carl and Alvina (Baier) Schmitke at rural Stephen. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Petri Lutheran Church. She attended “Happy Corner” Country School for eight years and then graduated from Stephen High School in 1953.
Millie worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for twenty years, but because of health issues, retired early. On March 23, 1957 Millie was united in marriage to Emery Horien. They started out living in Thief River Falls, but in 1965 purchased the Florence and Waldimore Wendt farm near Holt. They lived there until April of 2022, when they moved to Valley Home Assisted Living and then to Greenleaf Assisted Living, both in Thief River Falls. In December of 2022 they moved to Hillcrest Senior Living in Red Lake Falls. Millie greatly appreciated the care received and all of the staff at Hillcrest.
Millie was a member of the Nazareth Church of Holt for many years. At Nazareth, she was an active member of the Naomi Circle and Ladies Aide and held offices in both. She also helped teach vacation Bible school and was involved in quilting at the church. Millie was a member of the Thief River Falls Coin Club for many years and held various officer positions. Millie was also an Election Judge for Excel Township. She enjoyed quilting and needlework and was an avid collector of Red Wing Glassware.
Millie was the eighth and last remaining of twelve children. She is survived by her loving husband, Emery, of 66 years; brothers-in-law, Marc (Shirley) Horien of Holt, and Bob Skogland of Karlstad; sisters-in-law, Alyce Schmitke of Roseau, and Joyce Schmitke-Pricket of Apache Junction, AZ; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandparents; and siblings and their spouses; sisters, Freda (John) Varland, Agnes (Richard) Ostrem, Margaret (Clifford) Bugge, Betty (William) Waterworth, Amy (Elmer) Gutterud; brothers, Harold (Doris) Schmitke, Arnold (Hedwig) Schmitke, Otto (Mary) Schmitke, Irvin Schmitke, Martin Schmitke and Carl Jr. Schmitke; and sisters-in-law, Janice Schmitke, Darlene Horien-Hallstrom and Arleen Horien-Skoglund.
The funeral service to celebrate Mildred’s life was held on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt, with Reverend Sheila Michaels officiating. The burial was held at the Holt Cemetery, Holt.
