Thief River Falls – Janet L. Lundin, of Thief River Falls, passed away with family at her side on Sunday, May 21, 2023.
Janet was born in Ada and lived her school age years in Lockhart, with her parents Alice and Ed Stauning.
In 1957 she married Marvin Lundin of Warren. She worked for the County Extension office until they started their family; Lori in 1959, Jeri in 1960. Following the work path of Marv with the Warren Sheaf and the Times, they moved to Thief River Falls and added son Mark to the family in 1962.
Jan was a true pioneer woman in the sense that she used every piece of fabric she purchased, she was a great cook, sewed clothing, quilts, and welcomed brides needing dress alterations.
As a child she raised animals for 4-H projects with her chickens and ducks. Later in her career as SuperMom she was a 4-H leader and volunteer with the Pennington County Fair, taught her kids (and husband) to sew and cook, how to grow a garden and freeze and can the produce.
Supper was always on the table at 5:30 and it wasn’t a holiday without her beautiful table settings. As a teenager, she was a Minnesota State Champion Cherry Pie Baker.
She always lent a helping hand with the family dogs, the prolific cats, the horses, the trips to the State Fair and countless school and sporting events of her kids. She also cared for two sets of grandparents and several aunts with patience and love through their golden years. She loved to serve her community and managed to find time for Mrs. Jaycees, Trinity Church’s Sunday School, Circles and quilting groups and the Northwestern Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary.
She encouraged both adults and kids to build great friendships in the neighborhood with card parties, Halloween parties, front yard baseball, football, keep away and tennis. These relationships created lifelong friends for our entire family. Remember the neighborhood water fights inside and outside of the homes? She loved to fish with Marv on Lake of the Woods and constantly challenged him in the “biggest fish” competition with each outing. Throw in many years of craft shows with Marv…that is truly a lifetime of love, learning, sharing, giving and caring.
Janet was preceded in death by Marv, her husband of 61 years; parents, Alice and Ed Stauning; and infant brother, Tom.
She is survived by daughters, Lori (Steve) Schwartz of Maple Grove, Jeri (Arne) Espeseth of New Brighton; and son, Mark (Janelle) Lundin of Bemidji. Additional surviving family include granddaughters, Kara (Stefan) Wolf with great-granddaughters, Solveig and Gwynneth; Kelsey (JP) Schwartz Awad; Tatum Lundin; and grandsons, Dillon and Garrett Lundin and Tanner and Noah Espeseth.
A Celebration of Life at Trinity Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls is scheduled for Friday, May 26 with a 12 p.m. visitation, 1 p.m. service and reception to follow at the Lundin home. Private burial will take place at Pleasant View Cemetery in Lockhart.
