Thief River Falls – Tillie Irene Holmstrom, 101, of Thief River Falls, formerly of Newfolden, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 9, 2023 at the Thief River Care Center with her loving family by her side.
Tillie Irene Jarshaw, was born November 20, 1922, the daughter of Alfred and Tilla “Tillie” (Langlie) Jarshaw in New Solum Township, Marshall County. She was baptized in the Christian faith at home and confirmed at Rindal Lutheran Church. She attended Busy Bee Rural School and Newfolden High School, graduating in 1943. Following graduation Irene moved to Bremerton, WA, where she worked for Pacific Bell Telephone Company. She moved to Minneapolis in the spring of 1944 and worked in defense plants until 1945, when she moved back to the home farm.
Irene was united in marriage to Ray Manly Holmstrom, November 11, 1945 in Rindal Lutheran Church. Following their marriage, the couple purchased a farm in 1946. Ray passed away on January 23, 1984, and Irene stayed on the farm until September 2004 when she moved to Greenleaf Assisted Living. She was there until 2022, when she then moved to the Thief River Care Center.
She was an excellent seamstress, enjoyed gardening and working with her flowers. Irene also enjoyed cooking, baking, was well known for her hospitality, and especially loved spending time with her family.
She was a member of Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, past member of Rindal Lutheran Church, Sunday School and Ladies Group. Irene was also a member of Rosewood Homemakers, American Legion Auxiliary, Newfolden and a 4-H leader of New Solum 4-H Club.
Irene is survived by six children: Sharon Bring, Strandquist, Susan (James) Pederson, Newfolden, Janet (Gary) Hook, Woodbury, Steven (Sharon) Holmstrom, Newfolden, Barbara (Tom) Molskness, Thief River Falls, and Karen (John) Schroeder, Woodbury; grandchildren: Jeffrey (Tiffany) Bring, Michael (Sarah) Bring, Jason Bring, Jeremy (Sadie) Bring, Tiffany (Joe) Finley, Tricia (Joshua) Flohr, Barry (Becky) Pederson, Brian (Jackie) Hook, Timothy Hook, Amber (Mike) Henslin, Dustin (Tara) Holmstrom, Kari (Paul) Bergman, Kate (Cole Nymann) Holmstrom, Robert (Maren) Molskness, Tami (AJ) Hampson, Eric (Maisie) Molskness and Lydia Schroeder; great-grandchildren: Brekken and Corbyn Bring; Weston, Wyatt, and Leokadia Bring; Bailey, Jaxon, and Bridget Bring; Sydney, Lindsey, and Brinley Bring; Aubrey, Wesley, and Boden Finley; Auna and Ava Flohr; Brayden, Booklyn, and Brielle Pederson; Courtney, Kylie, and Brandon Hook; Bella and Emma Hook; Jonah, Jacob, and William Henslin; Bromley, Blaine, Boone, and Berks Holmstrom; Sullivan and Scout Bergman; Jens and Tova Nymann; Bradley and Brita Molskness; and Baker Molskness; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ray; her parents; sisters: Pearl Boe, Florence Lykken, and Ferne Bruggemen; brothers: Elmer, Sam, Irvin, James, and Maynard Jarshaw; son-in-law, Wesley Bring; great granddaughter, Mikayla Hampson; and all of Irene’s sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law.
A gathering time for family and friends will be held from 3–6 p.m. with a 5 p.m. Prayer Service on Sunday, December 17, 2023 at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls.
The service to celebrate Irene’s life will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, December 18, 2023, with visitation one hour prior, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls. Rev. Alex Amiot and Vicar Scott Olson will officiate. Burial will follow at Rindal Cemetery, New Solum Township, Marshall County.
