Grygla – L. Dennis Sundberg, 87, of Grygla, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, December 5, 2023, at Oakland Park Communities, Thief River Falls.
Leland Dennis Sundberg was born January 26, 1936, at home in Spruce Grove Township, Grygla, the son of the late Roland and Lillian (Anderson) Sundberg. He was baptized and confirmed at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in rural Grygla.
He attended Beltrami County Elementary School and graduated from Goodridge High School in 1954. He attended college at Bemidji State University, University of North Dakota and Moorhead State University. He attained several Bachelor’s Degrees in Science/Philosophy/Social Work, and a Master’s Degree in 1971. He taught school in Red Lake Falls, Bagley, Bottineau, ND, and Erskine. He taught for 30 plus years.
Dennis was inducted into the US Army in October 1958 and was honorably discharged in December 1958.
He retired in Grygla and was involved in many community events. For many years he was a coordinator for the Grygla-Gatzke Food Shelf. He was a volunteer for Marshall County Social Services, a treasurer for the Grygla Senior Meals and did part-time tax preparation. He enjoyed helping with Sunday School and prayer services and studying the Bible.
He loved buying and selling antiques and collectibles and traveling. He visited many countries around the world and loved to go to music concerts. He would often get signed autographs from many famous entertainers.
Dennis moved from Grygla to his new home at Oakland Park Communities in 2017 where he received wonderful care and much kindness. He felt at home there and the staff made him feel like they were family.
Dennis is survived by many cousins and friends.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, infant twin sisters, and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. with a celebration of Dennis’ life at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 22, 2024 at Johnson Funeral Service, 420 LaBree Avenue North, Thief River Falls, with Rev. Marilyn Grafstrom officiating.
Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Post 117, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2793 and Minnesota Army National Guard Honor Guard. Burial will be at the Wildwood Cemetery in Spruce Grove Township, east of Grygla.
