Red Lake Falls – David Olson, 77, of Red Lake Falls, passed away on Tuesday, March 19, 2024 at Benedictine Living Community of Crookston.
David Paul Olson was born December 31, 1946 at Crookston, son of Arnold Sr. and Mervyn (Ostgaard) Olson. He was raised in the Mentor area and attended school in Mentor, graduating with the Class of 1964. He attended the tech school in Thief River Falls receiving a degree in welding in 1966.
David entered the US Army in 1967, serving in Korea until 1968 and was honorably discharged in 1972.
On January 31, 1969 he was united in marriage to Janice Jeanne Gutheridge in Mentor. To this union two daughters were born, Jean and Patty. The couple made their home in Mentor until 1978 when they moved to Red Lake Falls.
Dave worked on the family farm near Mentor, he began his career as a truck driver, driving for Simplot, Northern Tank Lines, Strata and Hartz. He also owned and operated his own trucking company for several years. He also worked at Marvin Windows for a short time.
Dave loved spending time with his beloved dog Bud who everyone referred to as his third child. He took great pride in repairing and giving away 51 bikes to any child who needed one. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, reloading ammo and building guns. Most of all, he treasured the time spent with family and friends. He was always willing to lend a hand to anyone in need.
David is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Janice Olson of Red Lake Falls; daughters, Jean (Derek) Lambert of Red Lake Falls, Patty (Tory) Sorenson of Red Lake Falls; grandchildren, Lucas (Greg) Barge-Gulbranson, Taren (Jordan Jagol) Hasby, Jaye Pyatte, Reese Lambert, Tyler Sorenson; great-grandchildren, Aubree, Austin, Charlie; siblings, Roger Olson of Mentor, Nancy (Rolland) Gagner of Moorhead, Gloria Parkin of Florida; in-laws, Lester Gutheridge of Crookston, Judy (Dave) Hiemenz of Little Falls, Juanita (Dale) Karst of Idaho, Joanne Schultz of Red Lake Falls; along with several nieces and nephews.
David is preceded in death by his parents, Arnold Sr. and Mervyn; beloved grandson, Joshua Chaput; siblings, Steve, Gary and Arnold Jr.; in-laws, Lester, Mabel, Rosie and Raymond Gutheridge and Jane Briggs; nephews, Steve, Mike and Scott.
The memorial service for David will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, March 25, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Red Lake Falls, with Reverend Jeffrey Lytle officiating. Visitation will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church one hour prior to the service on Monday.
