Thief River Falls – James Swan, 82, of Thief River Falls formerly of Holt, passed away on Wednesday April 24, 2024 at Altru Hospital, Grand Forks, ND.
James Harlan Swan was born March 20, 1942 in Thief River Falls, the son of Arthur and Annabelle (Windahl) Swan. He was baptized and confirmed at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Newfolden. He attended Newfolden High School with the class of 1960.
Jim married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Horien, on June 22, 1963 in the Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt. The couple lived on the Iron Range for several years where their two sons Troy and Chad were born, and Jim worked in the mines.
The family returned to live in the Holt area in 1973 where Jim farmed and owned/operated his own waste oil business, Swan Oil. Jim also worked for Davidson Construction and Lunke Farms. The couple completed their family in 1978 with the birth of their son, Dustin.
Jim enjoyed following his children and grandchildren in their activities, and he also enjoyed watching the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. One of Jim’s favorite times was when he was able to attend the Daytona 500 where he got to watch his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt. He also loved going to their cabin at Lake of the Woods and fishing and hunting with his sons.
Jim was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt his entire adult life.
Survivors include his loving wife of 61 years, Mary Swan of Thief River Falls; sons, Troy (Dawna) Swan of Princeton, Chad (Lisa) Swan of Brainerd and Dustin (Amy) Swan of Otsego; grandchildren, Tory Swan, Korbyn Dale, Julia (Wesley) Holm, Jackson Harding, Carly (Collin) Ashley, Noah Swan and Riley Swan; great-grandchildren, Grayson Swan, Carson Dale and Eyla Dale; sister, Sonya (Gaylord) Pederson of Thief River Falls; and many other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Vernon (Betty) Swan, Wendell (Delphine) Swan, Robert (Beverly) Swan; sisters, Lois (Harold) Maki, Jean (Bill) Grindeland, Dorothy (Gerald Pederson & Lenord Swanson), and Joyce (Sidney) Knutson.
The service to celebrate Jim’s life was held at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, 2024 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Holt with Shawn Wagner officiating. Visitation was one hour prior to the service. Burial was at Holt Cemetery.
