Thief River Falls – Jimmie Asp, 84, of Thief River Falls, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 22, 2024 at the Villa St. Vincent in Crookston.
Jimmie Duane Asp was born July 18, 1939 near Goodridge, the son of Walter Leonard and Muriel Eloise (Phelps) Asp. After attending country school, Jimmie worked in a logging camp at the Northwest Angle.
On August 12, 1961, Jimmie was married to Jeanette Alice Kostrzewski in Thief River Falls. They made their home in the Thief River Falls, Goodridge and Mavie area and to this union six children were born, Jean, Jeff, June, Jay, Jerrold and Jennifer.
He worked at several jobs in Thief River Falls including Land-O-Lakes, Hartz Foods and Concrete Inc. Jimmie worked at Hartz Foods for over 34 years as a forklift operator and mechanic. During this time he earned his CDL License, Boilers License and handled all the Hartz Foods/Hartz Truckline DOT inspections.
Jimmie was a man of many talents. He was an excellent woodworker, some of the items he made were birdhouses, clocks, and corner shelves. He enjoyed refurbishing old vehicles, furniture, bicycles, his mother’s late 1940s McCormick Farmall tractor, a 1956 Ford Victoria and 1958 Ford Fairlane. He and Jeanette drove many miles visiting different farmers looking for parts for the vehicles. He also enjoyed gardening, fishing at Lake-Of-The-Woods, camping and helping Jeanette with chores around the house.
Jimmie was a member of the Eagle’s Club and the local Classic Car Club in Thief River Falls.
Survivors include his loving wife of 63 years, Jeanette of Thief River Falls; children, Jean (Curtis) Tieman of Goodridge, June (Guy) Skluzacek of Greenwood, IN, Jay (Joanna) Asp of Thief River Falls, Jerrold Asp of Red Lake Falls and Jennifer (Donald) Burton of Lancaster; grandchildren, Jesse (Kelsi) Wilson, Nicholas (Cassie) Wilson, Matthew Wilson, Naomi (Andy) Brons, Kyle Asp, Zachary Skluzacek, Emily Skluzacek, Breandun Asp, Chandler (Kayla) Asp, Tessa Black, Janna Black, Josh Brooks, Courtney (James) Hauert, Lynnaea (Matt) Soares, Nathan Rice; 19 great-grandchildren plus one due in December; siblings, Johanna (Larry) Kruger of Twin Lakes, Joseph Asp of Thief River Falls, Jonathan Asp of Roosevelt; many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his son, Jeff; parents; siblings, Varadeen (Arnie) Christensen, Caroline (Kenneth) Carlson, infant Walter Asp Jr., and Frank Asp.
The service to celebrate Jimmie’s life was held at 5 p.m. on Monday, May 27, 2024 at Johnson Funeral Service in Thief River Falls with visitation one hour prior to the service. Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery in Thief River Falls following a time of lunch and fellowship.
