Thief River Falls – Marcella “Marcy” Dunrud, 95, of Thief River Falls, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Thief River Care Center with her loving family by her side.
Marcella Ann Rose was born August 1, 1929, in Veseleyville, ND the youngest of eight children born to Frank P. and Mary Agnes (Janousek) Rose. At the age of 5 years old, Marcy moved with her family to Grafton, ND where she grew up and attended school and she only spoke Bohemian. At a young age, Marcy developed Rheumatic Fever and she had to learn how to walk all over again.
She worked at Ben Franklin in Grafton and it was during this time that Marcy met the love of her life, Kenneth Dunrud. The couple married on November 14, 1949, in Grafton. To this union, 5 children were born, Kathryn, Karen, Michael, Steven and Craig. They made their home in Bemidji, Clearbrook, Thief River Falls, Viking, Lowell, IN and after Kenneth retired from the Lakehead Pipeline, they returned to Thief River Falls where they continued to reside.
Marcy’s pride and joy was being a wife and mother. She cherished her time at home while the kids were growing. She was a very good cook and baker, especially pies, banana bread and potato salad. When they lived at the Lakehead Pipeline house in Viking, Marcy was known to give haircuts and pull teeth for the neighborhood kids.
Along with her best friends Lois Hook and Audrey Kasprick, Marcy worked for Johnny Palowski during the potato harvest. Marcy also worked at the Viking Co-op Store which was owned by her friends Gary and Jean Anderson. She also cooked at Johnnie’s Café and worked at Woolworth’s in Thief River Falls.
Marcy canned over 500 quarts from their garden every year and baked 14 loaves of bread every week.
Marcy and Kenny were very active at the VFW Post in both Lowell, IN and Thief River Falls, for many years where she was very active with the Auxiliary.
She was a member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls.
Marcy is survived by children, Karen Krantz, of Karlstad, Michael (Teri) Dunrud, of Viking, Steven Dunrud, of Viking, and Craig (Roxanne) Dunrud, of Viking; grandchildren, Lisa (Daran) Solbreken, of Clear Lake, Sarah (Thomas) Lee, of Belgrade, Brian (Donnelle) Krantz, of Karlstad, Philip (Liz Benke and her daughter Bella) Krantz, of Strandquist, Karey (Jeremy) Johnson, of Goodridge, Brock (Mindy) Dunrud, of Viking, Miranda (Austin) Knoll, of Warren; and stepgrandchildren, Shane Knutson, of Detroit Lakes, and Chris Knutson, of Newfolden; great-grandchildren, Tiana Solbreken, Jacob Solbreken, Tyler Lee, Madison Lee, Britni (Seth) Hoglo, Crysta (John) Halgrimson and Kandis (Trevor) Matelski, Keegan Krantz, Rylie (Aaron) Nelson, Tucker Krantz, Liberty (Dustin) Osland, Jordon Johnson, Baylie Dunrud, Brycen Dunrud, Taylor Knoll, Chase Knoll, and Henry Knoll; great-great-grandchildren, Melody, Thea, Kaspian, Torr, Eve, Knox, and Cash; sister-in-law, Nora Rose, of Grafton, ND; special friends, Ben and Erica Reese and their children, Brynlee and Hadley; and many nephews, nieces, relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth in 2012; daughter, Kathryn (Wayne) Sundstedt; son-in-law, Randy Krantz; parents; siblings, Frank Rose, Patricia (Joseph) Devos, Cyril (Eileen) Rose, Lillian (Cecil) Martin, Marian (Francis) Devos, Della (Henry) Dietrich, and Jerry Rose.
On Thursday, August 22, 2024, a 9:30 a.m. Rosary will be recited with the visitation will follow, with the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Thief River Falls, with Father Craig Vasek presiding.
