Plummer – Jean Carpenter of Plummer, passed away on Thursday, October 17, 2024, at Greenleaf Assisted Living in Thief River Falls.
Jean Genevieve Braaten was born June 29, 1924, at Grand Forks, ND, daughter of Oscar and Louise (Christianson) Braaten. The family lived in Dunseith, ND where she graduated from high school in 1942. The family purchased a farm and moved to Plummer in 1942. She met her future husband Eugene, working in a potato field near Grand Forks, ND.
Jean was united in marriage to Eugene Carpenter at the courthouse in Red Lake Falls. He entered the US Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, FL where she joined him and was employed at a restaurant. Following his honorable discharge they returned to Plummer. To this union 11 children were born, Carol, Judy, Gary, Danny, Lyle, Russ, Melody, Cindy, Nancy, Corey and Kim.
Jean worked in the sewing department at Arctic Cat for 20+ years, she was also employed as a baker at the hospital in Thief River Falls.
Eugene and Jean were together all of the time including trapping, and wild ricing, etc. The couple spent winters in Arizona. She enjoyed gardening and flower gardening. She was a volunteer in the community garden in Plummer. She was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, American Legion Auxiliary, the Red Hats Society, Homemakers Club and quilting.
Jean is survived by Carol Hovet of Wautoma, WI, Judy (Jim) Kelley of Plummer, Gary Carpenter of Lake George, Lyle (Fern) Carpenter of Bagley, Russ Carpenter of Plummer, Melody Beaudoin of Idaho Falls, ID, Cindy (Bruce) Thomas of Manhattan, KS, Nancy (Randy) Pederson of Thief River Falls, Corey (Barb) Carpenter of Cape Coral, FL, and Kim (Minette) Carpenter of Hawley; grandchildren, Daryl, Dana, David, Dean, Deeann, Jimmer, Jeff, Jared, Sean, Tracy, Tanya, Grant, Jason, Blaine, Emily, Lori, Sally, Ross, Amy, Beth, Chad, Andrea, Alan, Arthur, Margaret, Danielle, Miranda, Tyler, Carolyn, Thomas, Kyrsten, and Nick; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Merle Gagner of Red Lake Falls; and several nieces and nephews.
Jean is preceded in death by her husband, Eugene; parents, Oscar and Louise; son, Danny; grandsons, Danny, and Jack; great-granddaughter, Janessa; siblings, Gloria, Delphine, and an infant brother; son-in-law, Vernon Hovet; and daughter-in-law, Joan Carpenter.
The funeral for Jean will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 23, 2024 at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Plummer, with Reverend Jonathan Dodson officiating.
Burial will be held at Emardville Cemetery in rural Plummer.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.
