Radium – Phyllis McGregor, 89, of Radium, entered into Eternal Life on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at North Star Manor of Warren with her family by her side.
Phyllis Mae Nelson was born on May 9, 1935, in Sanders Township, Pennington Co. One of seven children of Victor Sr. and Tilda (Brandrud) Nelson, Phyllis attended country school before graduating from Lincoln High School in Thief River Falls, Class of 1952. Blessed with a sharp and active mind, Phyllis was a member of the National Honor Society and co-salutatorian of her class. She prized her intellect and kept it active through reading, writing, and memorizing and reciting poetry. Following her graduation, Phyllis attended teacher’s college and taught country school for six years in Pennington and Marshall Counties, then two more after her marriage.
On November 15, 1959, Phyllis was married to Wilbert “Willie” McGregor at Redeemer Lutheran Church of Thief River Falls. The young couple moved to Comstock Township where they raised their children; Phyllis keeping house, helping on the farm, and raising and showing their registered Polled Hereford cattle. Once the children were in school, Phyllis worked in finance for Pennington Co. Social Services, a job she enjoyed for twenty years, retiring on May 12, 1999 and receiving the NW County Social Service Award.
She was active in Immanuel Lutheran Church of Radium, the 4-H, and the girl scouts, and after retirement (in addition to wintering in Emporia, KS, and Apache Junction, AZ) she worked at the Marshall Co. Group Home.
Phyllis loved people and enjoyed serving them, both at work and at home. A visit to Phyllis’ included many cups of coffee, as many treats as she could make, and probably your favorite meal. Comfort food was always on the menu: fresh bread and buns, (perfect) hamburgers, meatballs, or mashed potatoes and gravy. She was an adoring grandma, with days on the farm capped with nighttime stories of family history and lore.
In her last days in the nursing home, her thoughts were, as ever, about others. She gave of what she had and desired they know God’s love through her. May she rest in peace and spend this Christmas with Willie.
Left to mourn her passing are four children, Donald (Kathy) McGregor of Radium, Martha Ann (Howard) Bjorgaard of Jamestown, ND, Ronald (Crystal) McGregor of Twin Valley, and Mark (Laura) McGregor of Stephen; nine grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to Willie, who died on May 18 of this year, after 64 years of marriage, Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; all of her siblings – sisters, Betty Olson, Marian Finstad, June Scholin, and Kathleen Flaten, and brothers, John Nelson and Victor Nelson; and in-laws, Ray and Martha McGregor.
In lieu of flowers: “Save your money and bring a canned good for the food shelf.” – Phyllis McGregor + Monetary Donations also accepted.
The funeral service will take place on Thursday, December 12, 2024, at 1 p.m., at Zion Lutheran Church (LCMS) of Warren.
