Thief River Falls – Susan “Sue” Kay Hanson, 74, of Thief River Falls passed away on February 28, 2025, at Sanford Medical Center in Fargo, ND, surrounded by loving family.
Sue was born on April 1, 1950, in Appleton, to Lawrence and Jean Stock. The eldest of four children, she was raised on a farm near Appleton, where she developed a lifelong love of wheat fields. She attended country school in rural Swift County, and later graduated high school in 1968 prior to continuing her education at the University of Minnesota Crookston.
Above all else, Sue was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She married Darryl Hanson in May 1974 and had a happy fifty years of marriage. They had two daughters, Marissa and Kaija, who Sue loved dearly. She spent the first few years of her children’s and grandchildren’s lives as a stay-at-home mother, but others may remember her from being in their classrooms as a paraprofessional at Washington Elementary School, or reading to them as a media center assistant at Challenger Elementary School, both in Thief River Falls.
Sue was happiest spending time with her grandchildren, Sebastian, Dexter, and Else. She followed their activities very closely and took immense pride in their accomplishments.
Left to mourn her passing are her husband, Darryl; daughters, Marissa Hanson and Kaija (Jason) Kirby; grandchildren, Sebastian Hanson, Dexter and Else Kirby; siblings, Marsha Kittelson and Brad Stock; mother-in-law, Evelyn Kostrzewski; brothers-in-law, Mike (Kathy) Hanson and Doug Koelfgen; sisters-in-law, Lilly Stock, Roxanne Herzog, and Dawn Edlund; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her parents, Lawrence and Jean Stock; brother, Greg Stock; fathers-in-law, Duane Hanson and Edmund Kostrzewski; sister-in-law, Cindy Koelfgen; and many other beloved relatives.
A private family burial will take place at Emardville Cemetery in rural Plummer.
