Grand Forks, ND – Katherine Ann “Kathy” Hammer, 72, of Grand Forks, ND, passed away peacefully at home on May 26, 2025, with her husband of 42 years, Dale Hammer, by her side.
Known to many as “the Cake Lady,” Kathy was a feisty, generous, and witty soul who filled her world with warmth, laughter, and homemade desserts.
She was the loving mother of Kelly Lindseth (David) and Lindsey Prange (Alexander), and the proud “Grandma Cake” to Lane, Maisy, Cade, Cali, and Lydia Grace.
Kathy retired from Dakota Supply Group after 37 years and was beloved in her community for her creative, delicious cakes and her kind heart.
She grew up on a farm in Tabor, Minnesota, where she learned the value of hard work and resilience—qualities she carried with her throughout life.
Kathy is survived by her siblings, Ralph, Jeanne (Don), Yvonne (Chuck), Cindy, and Sue (Jeff).
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gertrude and Ludvik Kotrba; brothers, Robert, Roger, and Ronald; sister-in-law, Cheryl (Ralph); and brother-in-law, Rick (Cindy).
Kathy once said she hoped to be remembered for doing something good—and for being good at something. She was both. Her legacy lives on in laughter, stories, and every bite of cake that doesn’t quite measure up to hers.
A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, we invite you to celebrate Kathy’s sweet legacy by enjoying a slice of cake wherever you are.
Arrangements are with Amundson Funeral Home in Grand Forks, ND.
