Shirley Richter, 84

Thief River Falls – Shirley Ann Richter, age 84, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 11, 2025, in the comfort of her home.
Shirley was born on November 17, 1940, in Wahpeton, North Dakota, the beloved daughter of Ernest and Olive (Nygaard) Stenson. She was baptized and confirmed at DeLamere Lutheran Church, where her faith began and remained a quiet source of strength throughout her life. In later years, she was a devoted member of Zion Lutheran Church in Thief River Falls, where she found fellowship, comfort, and community.
She attended the DeLamere one-room schoolhouse from kindergarten through 12th grade, embracing the values of hard work, curiosity, and community. Shirley later pursued higher education, attending college and continuing to nurture her love of learning and personal growth.
Shirley was united in marriage to Roger Richter, and together they built a life rooted in love, faith, and family. To this union, three sons were born: David, Daniel, and Robert. Her devotion to her family was unwavering, and she took great pride in nurturing and supporting her children throughout their lives.
Over the years, Shirley contributed to her community through her work at Bright Spot Laundry and later at Kmart in Thief River Falls when it first opened. She eventually joined Digi-Key, where she worked for 17 years with dedication and pride before retiring.
Outside of work, Shirley found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She was a devoted dog lover, and her furry companions brought her endless comfort and companionship. A loyal fan of Minnesota sports, she followed the Twins, Vikings, and Wild with enthusiasm and heart. She also enjoyed traveling, exploring new places and experiences, and most of all, she cherished time spent with her grandchildren—moments filled with laughter, love, and lasting memories.
Known for her gentle spirit and enduring kindness, Shirley touched the lives of many with her warmth, generosity, and grace. Her life was a testament to compassion, resilience, and devotion—to her family, her community, and the values she held dear.
For nearly two decades, Shirley was lovingly cared for and deeply supported by her devoted companion, Brian Bothum. His steadfast presence brought comfort, laughter, and companionship to her daily life, and their bond was a source of strength and joy. Brian’s dedication and kindness were a true blessing, and his care enriched Shirley’s later years in countless ways.
Survivors include her sons, David A. (Jude) Richter and Daniel J.(Sally) Richter; grandchildren, Alexis F. Gade and Christina I. Richter; caretaker and companion, Brian Bothum; and many other relatives and friends who will miss her dearly.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger (2001); her infant son, Robert; her parents, Ernest and Olive Stenson; and her sister, Ruth Ronningen.
A celebration of life visitation for Shirley will be held on October 4, 2025 from 11:00 AM to 12:30 PM at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls.
Burial will follow at Saint Paul’s Lutheran Church Cemetery, Vergas.
