Thief River Falls – Edward Turn, 79, of Thief River Falls, formerly of Warren and Roseau, passed away unexpectedly on Thursday morning, November 20, 2025 at Encompass Health in Grand Forks, ND.
Edward Charles was born on October 22, 1946 in Crookston to Edwin and Inez (Anderson) Turn. He graduated from Thief River Falls High School in 1964 and received a degree in finance from the AVTI in Thief River Falls. In 1984, Ed graduated from the School of Banking at the University of Wisconsin — Madison.
On July 25, 1970, Ed was married to Linda Engelstad in Grace United Methodist Church of Warren. They made their home in Warren for 30 years where they raised their two sons, Scott and Jeffrey. Ed started his career in banking at Crookston National Bank and from there, he worked at the State Bank of Warren (Bremer) for over 30 years. In 2000 Ed and Linda moved to Roseau, where he was president of Border State Bank for four years, finishing his career at Unity Bank in Red Lake Falls/Thief River Falls. After 54 years in banking, Ed retired in 2019.
Volunteering and serving others was very near and dear to Ed’s heart. He was a member of the Warren Ambulance Corp, serving for many years, and for a term as its president. He also served on the Grace United Methodist Church Board, the Marshall Co. Fair Board, the Good Samaritan Center Advisory Board, the Marshall Co. DAC, the Northwest Regional Development Board, Warren Star City Commission, was a founding member of the Warren Jaycees (receiving the Outstanding Young Man of America Award in 1982), the treasurer of the WAO Booster Club, and he was the board chair of the ODC up until his death. Ed was also an active Lions member in Warren, Roseau, Red Lake Falls, and Thief River Falls, at both the local and district levels. Ed earned the Warren Builder of the Year award in 1987, and continued that legacy long after.
He had a love for sports and attended many sport events over the years following his kids and grandkids. In his later years, he didn’t miss a game on TV or the radio. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, watching his grandchildren grow up, and followed them in all their activities and sporting events. Ed’s favorite event was his annual fishing trip to LOW with his sons and grandkids. They made some wonderful memories that he cherished and he always had great fishing stories to tell. He also loved to hunt with his sons and grandson, along with the hunting crew he hunted with for decades.
Ed was a great caregiver for Linda these last years and she was able to return the favor when in August his legs and arms began to fail. They met while working at the bank, shared 55 great years together, and grew a family they loved. He will be deeply missed.
In addition to Linda, Ed is survived by his sons, Scott (Christie) Turn of Bemidji, and Jeffrey (Lisa) Turn of East Grand Forks; grandchildren, Mackenzie (Ethan) Granger, Mariah Page, Jordis Turn, Carson Turn, and Peyton Turn; great-grandchildren, Miles, Wrenley, and Axel Granger; and nieces and nephews, Jon Lehtinen, Tracy Lehtinen, and Vickie (Matthew) Temple, & Corey (Shanon) Spilde, and Elizabeth (Mike) Rowe; and many great-nieces-and-nephews.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Trudy (Rayno) Lehtinen; his parents, Edwin and Inez; in-laws, Wells “Bunty” and Lorene Engelstad; and sister-in-law, Judi (Craig) Spilde.
