Thief River Falls – James R. Nelson, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather passed away peacefully at his home on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, in Thief River Falls, surrounded by family.
Born on October 20, 1937, in St. Paul. He lived a full life marked by dedication to both his profession and his loved ones. His education began in South Minneapolis where he completed high school, later earning a two-year degree in Ag School, laying a solid foundation for his future endeavors.
On October 25, 1958, Jim was united in marriage to Joan Adams in St. Paul. To this union, two sons were born, Jeffrey and Bradley. Jim proudly served in the United States Army, contributing to the country he loved.
Jim worked in telephone repair at Northwestern Bell for 30 years, a career during which he became known for his reliability and skill. Following his retirement, he embraced farming, a passion that allowed him to connect with the land he cherished. He was an avid horseman, as well as a fine leather worker and saddle maker.
He was known for his witty personality, always ready with a great sense of humor that brought joy to those around him. Jim loved to be silly and joke, he loved to sing, and was a big flirt. He was a natural charmer. It never took too long for him to captivate the hearts of those around him.
He loved reading, shooting, and reloading. He was an avid deer and bird watcher. He loved a good cup of tea, good conversation, and some old-time music.
Jim leaves behind his devoted wife, Joan, and his two sons, Jeffrey and Bradley; his grandchildren, Ambra, Bryan, April, Amanda, Benjamin, and Tyler; and his great-grandchildren, Aadra, Jenna, Zander, Emelia, and James; and nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Ruben and Marianne Nelson; and his sister, Janet Haas.
Jim will be remembered not only for his contributions to his community and family but also for the warmth and kindness he shared with everyone he met. His spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew him.
A memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2026, at Johnson Funeral Service, Thief River Falls.
Visitation will be one hour before the service at Johnson Funeral Services, Thief River Falls.
Burial will take place at a later date.
