Winger – Orris “Orrie” Flermoen, age 84, of Winger, died Friday, April 17, 2026, at Essentia Health in Fosston.
Orris Delano Flermoen was born September 26, 1941, in Crookston, the son of Dennis and Bertha (Roe) Flermoen. He grew up on the family farm, attended Wide Awake Country School and graduated from McIntosh High School with the Class of 1959. Following graduation, Orrie worked at Sioux Oil in Winger then at Alumacraft Boat Co.
In January of 1964, he enlisted with the United States Army. He served in Frankfurt, Germany and was honorably discharged in January of 1966. After his discharge, Orrie returned and began working for Hart Motor Express.
On July 7, 1968, he was united in marriage to Susan McWilliam at Calvary Lutheran Church in Winger. The couple made their home together in Brooklyn Park. He later began working at Glen’s Truck Center in Rogers, from 1983 until 1990 and then at Lakeland Truck Center in South St. Paul, until his retirement in 2002. Sue and Orrie moved to Oak Grove Farm, just north of Winger, in 2003 to enjoy the simpler way of life. Susan passed in 2021 and Orrie remained in their home.
In his retirement years, Orrie truly enjoyed life at Oak Grove Farm. He held many Flermoen Family Reunions, arranged for the CP Holiday Train stop in the winter and in the fall hosted an old time Threshing Bee. Stepping back in time, Orrie liked to operate old machinery, load his own ammunition, tinker on his old tractors, stationary motors, and various old equipment, always leaving everything in their original state and not restoring them to look new. He was good at barking orders and would often tell you if you want a job done correct, you have to do it yourself!
Orrie also enjoyed fishing, taking rides in the car, and visiting with family and friends. He held a pilot’s license and last year earned his steam engine license at Rollag during the Western MN Steam Threshers Reunion.
Orrie was also a member of the Highway 2 Cruisers Car Club, Winger American Legion, and the Winger Lions, recently earning the distinguished Melvin Jones Award. Over the years, he made many friendships, touched countless lives and will be missed by many.
Orrie is survived by a sister, Betty Lou Myhrum; nieces and nephews, David Myhrum, Susan Myhrum, Marissa (Karl) Donner, MarJenna (Brady) Koehler, Stephanie (Kevin) Harvey and Shelley Hartnett; great-nieces and nephews, Stacey Myhrum, Kjersti (Dakota) Poissant, Chelsey (Steven) Cullen and Emmie Donner; great-great-niece and nephew, Bjorn Poissant and Erza Cullen; sisters-in-law, LaVonne McWilliam and Darla McWilliam; and many cousins, extended family and friends.
Orrie was preceded in death by his parents, Dennis and Bertha; wife, Sue; in-laws, John and Margrette McWilliam; nieces, Paulette Myhrum and Brenda Myhrum; brothers-n-law, Jan McWilliam and Bruce McWilliam; and sisters-in-law, Jean Hagen and Joey McWilliam.
